Free is an original song that forms part of a broader artistic research project entitled Listening with the Ocean. A project which calls on us to listen deeply and differently to each other, the ocean and the more-than-human world in general. It is a song that I wrote originally during the height of the court case and protests against Shell’s oil and gas prospecting off of the wild coast. It also happened to be during a rather extreme heat wave in Cape Town. The song is dedicated to the coastal environmental defenders whose courage and efforts make the work and art that I create both possible and necessary.
